Review of the Trimble Positions ArcPad Workflow

by Michele GeoMattix

Post-Processing GPS Data Collected with Esri Software

When Trimble announced that GPS Analyst was not going to be updated for ArcGIS for Desktop v10.1, I knew they had something brewing.  After a lot of wondering, they have finally announced the new Trimble Positions suite of products.  These products provide post-processing functionality for GPS data collected with Esri’s ArcPad and with Esri’s ArcGIS for Windows Mobile products.

Out with the Old, In with the New

For the ArcPad workflow, the Trimble Positions Desktop Add-In runs as an add-in in ArcMap and essentially replaces the old GPS Analyst extension.  I used the word ‘replaces’ very liberally.  Positions is completely different from GPS Analyst.  Their only similarity is the basic utility they provide.  How Positions goes about this is quite different from GPS Analyst.

On the mobile device, the Trimble Positions ArcPad Extension is nearly an exact replacement for GPSCorrect.  It silently runs in the background of ArcPad collecting the GPS data needed by the Desktop Add-In to post-process your data back in the office.

After giving the Trimble Positions products for ArcPad a good workout, I offer my review of this workflow in the video below.
